Chapter 33

It was a restless night for Lummel. Sleep didn't come easily for him anymore. When he did manage to get a few hours of sleep, he did nothing but toss and turn plagued by nightmares. So he just stopped trying. Jyotan, on the other hand, had no problems at all in that area and had a hard time keeping his eyes open. They spent a long time stuffed in the back of that caravan and dragged all the way out to Tallaros. It was time to catch up on what the bumpy, neglected roads had stolen from him. He couldn't remember the last time he had gotten a good night's sleep and Jyotan lay in his bunk reflecting on everything that happened. Jyotan hadn't gotten any decent amount of sleep since the night before he and Lummel went fishing. It seemed like so long ago.

Lummel got bored just lying about, so he decided to go wander around their new home. Get a feel for the place if he could. It wouldn't surprise him if they locked the door from the outside. Grasping the handle, Lummel pulled on the door, pleasantly surprised when it actually opened. Doing his best to stay quiet, he slipped out into the darkened hallway not wanting to wake Jyotan. At least one of them would get some rest.

As he walked around the narrow corridors, he began to wonder how so many people could stand living there. Everything was so sterile looking, full of dull colors and drab design. It had a certain sense of logic to it though. These people seemed to be on a mission (whatever it may be) and went out of their way to avoid any and all distractions. Lummel couldn't help but appreciate that.

He looked around inspecting all the open public areas when he heard the clashing of metal. Following the noise, he tried to find it through the maze of hallways. He swore they were built with the intention to confuse and disorient. Getting closer to the sounds of battle, he came upon a pair of very large training rooms. Side by side, they were dark and had at most a few dim torches scattered about the meager dreary walls. Lummel could see a purple glint in the shadows and the unmistakable voice of Telphus. He wondered if they were in the middle of a disagreement or if they were merely training. They appeared to be an even match for one another; but the longer he watched, the subtle details exposed the truth. Telphus fought with every bit of strength he could muster, and Lummel could see the level of concentration on his face. Milanna only gave the impression that she was having a hard time. Lummel was quite sure that she put just as much effort into the illusion of fighting as she did actual combat, if not more. She'd been toying with Telphus the entire time, and the ignorant fool had no idea.

It wasn't clear who would win that is until Milanna left herself open for a split second.
